We're hosting a Pints & Politics event in Saskatoon, in conjunction with our friends at Common Sense Saskatoon!
We'll be discussing why more Canadians are relying on food banks - even though we produce and have access to an enormous amount of food.
And what would it take to move from managing food insecurity to actually preventing it?
The Saskatchewan Institute is pleased to welcome Jared Fedorchuk, technology entrepreneur, community builder and co-founder and CEO of Saskatoon-based Levis Tech, for a conversation about the real causes of food insecurity and what we can do about them.
Drawing on his work with food banks across Canada and the United States, as well as his experience developing FoodCopia, Jared will explore how household economics, housing, transportation, food distribution, education and public policy all intersect when it comes to putting nutritious food on the table.
We'll talk about:
- Why food insecurity isn't simply a problem of food supply
- How poverty, housing and household finances affect food access
- Why usable food can be wasted while people go hungry
- The impact of food insecurity on children's health, education and opportunity
- Whether emergency food assistance is becoming a permanent part of our social safety net
- And what it would take to focus more seriously on prevention
Food banks are a bridge in a crisis. But what would it take to build a Saskatchewan where fewer people need that bridge in the first place?
Attendance is free, but RSVPs are required, however, as we have a capacity limit.
